The first step to ensure DIY success: math. Lots of math. Lucky for you, I’ve calculated it already if you want to make this style rug. A 6x9 drop cloth really measures 5’ 9” by 8’ 9”. The entire rug has a 1.5 inch border, with squares measuring 18” wide by 20” high, and 3” of space between squares.
The easiest way to tape off your lines is to get 1.5 inch painters tape; it saves on some measuring.
Tape completely, then set on top of a tarp or other protected surface and paint away. This will take a lot of paint, because the fabric will soak it up. To give you an idea: we used an entire tester of Zen to paint the three squares.
Pro tip: If you want to use this rug outdoors, treat it with a product like Rust-o-leum NeverWet Outdoor Fabric Spray.
We’re inspired by the dark hues that span the sky in Autumn evenings, and love the moody look incorporated into interiors. Dark yet serene, it’s an ideal color for an accent wall, trim, or even an entire room.
